About the Vera Institute of Justice

The Vera Institute of Justice is powered by hundreds of advocates, researchers, and policy experts working to transform the criminal justice and immigration systems until they’re fair for all. Founded in 1961 to advocate for alternatives to money bail in New York City, Vera is now a national organization that partners with impacted communities and government leaders for change. We develop just, antiracist solutions so that money doesn’t determine freedom; fewer people are in jails, prisons, and immigration detention; and everyone is treated with dignity.

About the John Jay College Future of Public Safety Initiative

The mission of the John Jay College’s Future of Public Safety Initiative is to reshape public safety programs, policy, and budgets to support healthy, safe, and racially and economically just communities. The Initiative creates opportunities for diverse stakeholders – including practitioners, scholars, system-impacted advocates, and funders - to challenge assumptions, examine the data, learn from each other and build partnerships to generate true and lasting change.

John Jay College educates fierce advocates for justice, a calling that demands robust debate, rigorous inquiry and respectful dissent. Consistent with this commitment, we support academic freedom and convene conversations reflecting multiple perspectives. The views expressed at events held at John Jay belong to the speaker(s) and do not represent the opinion of the college.
